Financing a venture over several stages of corporate development through to a successful exit is more than providing the money – for us, it is also a substantial commitment of our attention and resources over a long period of time. We therefore make sure that the basis on which both sides make a decision is firmly established.
This starts with screening the business plan, initially on the basis of a concise executive summary. At first, we consider the attractiveness and plausibility of the opportunity at face value, assuming that everything the management claims is correct. Many plans do not meet this test.
If they do, we invite the team for an initial presentation. If the team is convincing, the personal chemistry is right and the claims, opportunities and risks hold up to our initial, more detailed scrutiny, we will issue an offer in the form of a detailed Letter of Intent.
Once signed, we start the formal due diligence process, including a series of formal and informal meetings with management and key members of the team, both at the company’s and our offices. If everything holds up to the test, we will make a final, unanimous decision among our team on the basis of a formal presentation by key team members and the results of the due diligence process, with which we seek formal approval in our Investment Committee.
The formal process usually takes between four to eight weeks.
